GENE BERG & GENE BERG ENTERPRISES

Gene's love affair with the VW Beetle began in 1956. From that time on, he devoted himself to modifying and racing VWs, as well as supporting events worldwide in one form or another. His early experiences were challenging; even stock VW parts were hard to come by except through the dealer. Everything he needed had to be fabricated from scratch, or another automobile part had to be modified to work. At that time, his primary interest was making his personal VW faster. He and Dee had been married for a couple of years and had three sons. Since Gene relied on his car for daily transportation, it had to maintain full reliability.

Soon, some of Gene's friends noticed how much faster his VW was, yet it still retained its longevity. They began asking him to rework their VWs, which he did as a sideline from 1957 until 1961. During this period, Gene met Andy Knebel, who owned a business in Renton, Washington, and did work for Gene. Gene eventually went to work for VW, quickly advancing to the position of service advisor in just six months. In late 1962, Gene opened his own VW shop in Renton, Washington, called Gene's Service, where he handled repairs, performance enhancements, bodywork, and paint.

By 1962, Gene could hold his own with his 1961 Beetle, which featured a modified Porsche engine. However, he soon realized that Porsche parts were too expensive, prompting him to focus on making the VW engine faster. In 1963, he built his first all-out VW-powered racecar and continued racing it until 1969, when he and his family moved to California. There, Gene joined the newly formed Deano (Lowry) Dyno Soar as a partner. However, after six months, Gene found the arrangement unsuitable and moved on in December 1969 to open Gene Berg Enterprises. Gene had been manufacturing various performance products, including drill press-operated fly cutters, boss cutters, sumps, intake manifolds, linkages, and close-ratio gears, even before relocating to California. His interest was more in developing performance products than in working on the cars themselves.

Fortunately for the industry, Joe Vittone, owner of the original Empi, and Dean Lowry, his R&D manager, shared similar interests and dreams in the late '50s. They had one additional goal: to develop a market and sell products to consumers. Like Gene, Joe was committed to producing high-quality products that offered better performance, longer life, and reliability. Dean, who led Empi's race program, supported this commitment and must be credited, along with Joe, as an innovator of many of today's products and technologies.

Without the early commitments to quality from Empi, Gene, and Dee, it's unlikely that this industry would have survived to this day.
