When the February 1975 Dune Buggies & Hot VWs issue hit the newsstands, it wasn’t seen as groundbreaking or trendsetting. At the time, off-road racing and Baja Bugs ruled the scene, and the magazine focused heavily on technical how-tos, drag racing coverage, and kit car builds. The issue was printed on plain paper and entirely in black and white—except for the cover.
It was in that very issue that the term “California Look” made its debut. There was no guarantee this new customizing style would catch on. Inspired by the performance-focused modifications of VW drag racers preparing for the quarter-mile, the look emphasized a clean, stripped-down aesthetic with subtle performance upgrades. What began as a niche trend in Southern California soon evolved into a global movement—one that continues to thrive five decades later.
Today, it’s remarkable how many Cal Look enthusiasts still draw inspiration from that original 1975 article when building their cars.
