We spotted this late-model Jeep at the recent Great Canadian show and wondered, why is a Jeep parked in the middle of a VW show? The answer surprised us to say the least!

Volkswagen into a Jeep

A most unusual conversion produces more power, torque, gets better mileage and weights less!

This whole idea started way back in 1998, when the New Beetle first came out. HPA Motorsports in Langley, B.C. Canada, took a brand new '98, removed the TDI engine and installed a VR6 powerplant for a customer. That original TDI engine was stuck in the corner for years, until just recently, when they started to look closely at a Jeep Wrangler, and thought about making the conversion. The Jeep's 2.5 liter Chrysler gas engine was infamous for being low on torque, got terrible gas mileage and was very expensive to repair — which was often! On the other hand, the Volkswagen TDI diesel engine is 55 lbs lighter, makes gobs more torque and fuel economy is light years better. So the HPA team figured out an adapter for the VW-to-Jeep conversion, came up with a wiring harness and converted the Jeep to burn diesel fuel instead of hi-octane gasoline. The results were so impressive, that HPA spun-off a new company called Coty Built.
There is plenty of room inside the Jeep's massive engine compartment for the rather compact VW TDI systems. Needless to say, when officials from both Volkswagen and Jeep saw this conversion, their heads began to spin!
The engine of choice for this conversion is the 2003 to 2006 1.9 liter PD diesel VW engine. It can be made OBDII compatible and is emissions legal to boot (since in many cases the replacement engine is newer than the vehicle). This conversion can be done on 1990 and newer Jeeps.
Coty Built has been shown at the SEMA show with incredible response.
